RE: Problem w/HWH retracting this AM- ideas, help please?

Somewhere around this forum there have been discussions about jack retraction vs. temp, and somewhere in the back of my mind I remember some crazy number like 12min in temps that cold. OLDMAN is a wiz at finding that stuff, maybe he'll chime in here with some pointers for ya.
Bottom line is that IMO, you have a non-problem if it does finally retract.

RE: Digital TV questions, weak or sporatic signals

I hooked up one of my converter boxes.Picture is great.I thought from reading other questions on this forum, that you either have signal or you don't. Some stations will kind of freeze up like a DVD that has a scratch on it,then the signal will go back to normal. I also have one station that I get a signal but it is really fragmented.A few more things. I have one channel that I get a really good analogue signal but I can't get it on digital. Could it be that they are not yet transmitting in digital? Also, some channels will show a number at the top of the screen and a message will come up that says" waiting".I wait for awhile but nothing happens. What's up with that? Thanks. You are sitting right on the edge of the digital cliff effect. As the atmosphere changes (and it always is), the signal will drift into, and out of capture range. Try tweaking your antenna slightly while watching the meter in the STB and you might be able to get that extra all important 1db.
As for the same channel analog working and the digital not, most likely the digital IS on the air but transmitting either at reduced power, on a temporary antenna lower on the tower, antenna pointing in the wrong direction, or all of the above. Take a look at Antennaweb and see what the calculated receive signal from each one of the digital transmitters is. That will give you an idea where the problem is. Also Antennaweb shows the ERP of the digital now, and after the analog cutoff when the antennas, power, positions on the tower should be finalized.

RE: Tuning a digital TV

...The batwing points perpendicular to the desired direction. ...you should have a little pointer on the rotation dial to point the way.
I kind of wondered if the antenna was optimized 90 degrees off the bearing. It looks like the little pointer is along the long axis of the wing - so to adjust inside the RV, eg in my situation, I'd take the bearing (320) and add or subtract 90 to align the pointer along a 230 or 50 degree bearing?YIKES, I just flashed on where the pointer is when the antenna is nested, and you're correct! The bearing I want to verify this afternoon is in what primary direction is the UHF most directional. I have never noticed it but others have.

RE: Tuning a digital TV

You can't scan a fringe market if the antenna isn't in the general direction.
Dave- The batwing points perpendicular to the desired direction. The wing is the VHF element so you need to expose it broadside to the signal to gather RF. Also,(something I just found out)the UHF element is located internal to the head and is somewhat directional, but you should have a little pointer on the rotation dial to point the way.

RE: Altmans RV

Has anyone out there ever bought from Altmans RV in Los Angeles? If so, how is there customer service? Also, is there "no haggle pricing" really such - or is there room for negotiation (pricing or extras).Just a question: Why would you go to Altman's (that doesn't have the best reputation) when you have Barber RV right down the street?

RE: Ham Question

The VX-7 is a grown-up version of my VX-5 that I have had for at least 10 years (although I believe it too has been replaced by the VX-8). Being in Simi you will hear LOTS of both 2meter and UHF activity off of Oat, Saddle Peak, South, and Razno with very little effort. Assuming that the -7 still has the same receivers you can also use it to listen to LA County Fire (and probably Ventura as well) when the fires are racing around the hills. I have all the local airport towers, helicopter comm channels, several enroute channels (yea is does OK on aircraft AM), all the FRS channels, all the broadcast TV newsroom comm channels, a few FM's, and still have lots of room for all the repeaters I use, + a few Simplex channels.
PAY ATTENTION to how well you can read the keyboard and display both during the day and at night. Hopefully they have changed the backlight LED's because they really suck at night.
It's no big deal using the radio with an external antenna, but on a 12V adapter it WILL get hot. I haven't used an installed VHF/UHF mobile since 1985 and get along OK.. not great.

RE: Class "A" floor mats

I got a plastic desk chair mat (the type with the little points to keep it from scooting) and cut it to size. Used a table saw to cut it - be sure to wear goggles - those little points pop off & fly!!It has been in place for 2 yrs now and has not moved at all. Don has no agility at all and uses his feet to push himself into the chair so it gets a workout.I did the same. Make SURE you wear gloves handling these mats cuz' they can draw serious blood!

RE: Analog to Digital Transition FAQ - Draft

Thanks Tom, this has been a LONG time coming as this subject takes up significant bandwidth these days.
It looks like all the basics are covered, enough to ask more educated questions anyway.. :)
All I see are punctuation and spelling cleanups, but it IS a draft.

RE: will oceanfront parking cause damage?

Just about all we do is camp at the beach, probably where HWYBNB and the rest go, and we just make sure that the coach is washed as soon as we get home. The only thing I do do is cover the beach side aluminum wheels to keep the pitting down.

RE: Has Scanner freq for Yosemite changed?

DickA- so does that mean we can get the broadcasts if we buy a digital scanner?Yes, as long as it's not encrypted. The APCO25 scanners are still around $500 tho.. :(
I got a few web pages sent to me that are all VHF, so these may not work anymore, although isn't it silly that NPS moves to 800MHz (repeater or not) in a mountainous environment? Ask CHP why they still run Low Band..
Here is one: www.tuolumneradio.com/yosemite.html

RE: Has Scanner freq for Yosemite changed?

I just finished entering 25 freq from Radioreference.com by hand. On company time. I also entered those new freqs in the 400's in the liimited search bank. I won't be up there until Jan or Feb.Dave, I'm still waiting for my friend too. They apparently talk every weekend on some ham net, but the radio tech apparently is out playing with his new girlfriend :) I'll PM them, or post here as soon as I know. Sounds like you have time.

RE: abs light stays on

Hi.
Good news!
You probably have the same problem as I had.
/93 ford E350.
My Ford mechanic knew as soon as I told him my light would not go out.
You probably need a rear differential sensor assymbly.
Ford Part no..DY1123.
Cost..$28.42.
Takes about ten minutes to change.
Apparently this is a common occourance and easily diagnosed and fixed.
Drive down to your local Ford dealer and have a chat before you start shelling out big bucks chasing ghosts.Forgot about that one! My Exploder had it's rotation sensor changed out for the same reason last year.

RE: abs light stays on

The thing about ABS is (at least in my experience) you have to basically be in real trouble (hard brakes to locked up wheels) before that pump modulator comes on. I can think of maybe 4 times my ABS have actually come on, all on wet, or frozen roads. If you're in So. Cal the chances of seeing either in the near future are slim to none (knock on wood).
